The phrase “computer bug” was first coined after an actual insect was found inside a computer’s hardware. The bug was found by Grace Hopper, an American computer scientist. She and her team were building a computer system and noticed that it was starting to fail. When they opened the computer’s hardware, they discovered why… a moth was trapped inside! Now when something fails in either software or hardware we call it a “bug”.
Did you know that there are some famous computer bugs out there? Y2K is a well-known computer bug that was predicted to cause serious problems for many computers — and industries — in the year 2000. When writing the year on a computer, instead of writing it as four digits, coders used to try to save memory by using only the last two digits of the year. So computers were unable to distinguish 2000 from 1900.
Fortunately, when people realised this, many programmers worked hard to fix this problem ahead of time, preventing any major issues.
Did you know that we at Resolute Robotics teach learners about the concepts of debugging and troubleshooting from as early as Grade 1?
